How I Do What I Do

Sleep

Starting with sleep when integrating a Whole Person Health approach is imperative. The function of sleep within the body goes well beyond the feeling of being rested. Well regulated sleep influences not only our focus, mood and cognitive function, but also increases sensitivity to circulating hormones, improves hunger/satiety cues, improves blood sugar regulation/insulin sensitivity and reduces the overall risk for cardiac events such as heart attacks.

I start here as well, because data demonstrates that poor sleep reduces the ability to maintain new habits by 67%. Short story, if you aren’t rested, you can’t maintain new changes.

Stress

Stress management is the second pillar of focus in the Whole Person Health model. While experiencing stress is universal, learning techniques that balance both negative and positive stresses day to day helps to continue to build a framework for healthful positive change.

Effective stress management skills also offer more than mental health support. Stress is not merely an emotion that is experienced, but also contributes to physiological processes including immune function, hormone regulation and hunger/satiety regulation.

Nutrition

The third pillar of the Whole Person Health approach is food. Food is a universal need, and often a very personal and cultural choice, yet in our current environment it can be difficult to know how it is affecting our health and well being - or the right way to make changes.

Take that confusion, add in time constraints and full schedules and you’re left with food habits that often aren’t serving our nutritional needs and are often potentially unsatisfying. I focus on helping to simplify the food paradox we find ourselves within, and offer workable, time saving and delicious solutions that can be implemented in any household - improving the health of the whole family.

Movement

The fourth pillar of Whole Person Health is movement. This is often a daunting one for many, so I’ve found that having 3 areas of success prior to introducing movement has worked well.

Our bodies were made to move, otherwise we wouldn’t have more than 300 moving joints to do just that. Movement serves many purposes, from weight management and strength, to effective stress relief and play. As with the previous pillars, the goal here is to encourage a regular movement practice that feels good, improves strength and is simple enough to create momentum toward healthy change.
